Sport for Women Day 2012

All club Reps

Sport for Women Day, Sunday 4th March 2012,  Canberra (on the lawns next to Questacon).

Kicks off at 11.00am at Commonwealth Place.

Meet down at the lake to launch a boat at 10.30am to paddle to Commonwealth Place

CDBA Marquee, banner, table, flyers etc will be set up at the venue.

This is a great opportunity for the CDBA to promote dragon boating and it is for all women to get involved.  I am asking club reps to send this message on to all your female paddlers and it would be great to see at least two or three female paddlers from each club to meet down at the lake to paddle the boat to Commonwealth Place and participate in the Sport for Women Day.

It would be great to have an accredited sweep and a coach to join in on the day.

The day is about recognising our elite female athletes, but more importantly raising the participation level in sport, and is set to be a wonderful day out for all the family.

Firstly, if you could provide the names of the female paddlers and email addresses who would  like to get involved on the day and then I can communicate with you all with further details.

If your club would like to participate in a big way you certainly can, meet us at the venue so long as I have about two or three paddlers from each club to paddle the boat to the venue.

NO Club uniform to be worn.... paddlers can wear a non club paddling shirt, an ACT or Australian rep shirt is acceptable.

Lake Depths

Since the level of the lake has been lowered, kayak and other paddlers have advised of hitting previously submerged snags, especially in the area of Molonglo Reach and the river. There may also be other areas of the lake where the water is much lower than we have been used to. It may be wise for paddlers to avoid the extremes of East Basin, and to proceed with caution when paddling near shore. For further information about what is happening with the lake, please visit the National Capital Authority website (www.natcap.gov.au).

Safety Issues

Another reminder of safety issues. Sweeps must be familiar with the rules of the waves, these can be found on the  Maritime services board website
http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/rec_boating/sbh_pdf.html
(you can do the multi choice question tests to see how much you know)

The flow of traffic around the lake should be on the right hand side of the lake, we  use water way rules to ensure everyone's safety.

This includes PFD's and lights between sunset and sunrise. The lights indicate your travelling direction and also the bow and stern of your vessel, you should make sure the lights on your bow are set to the correct side of the boat, green on the right or starboard side and red to the port or left side of the boat. The white light is on the stern, please make sure your crews understand this.

Power gives way to sail , we are considered a powered vessel and we have the ability to brake.

Become familiar with the rules of the waves it is for all our safety and other lake users.
